NYC Consortium Promotes Collaboration Among Scientific Researchers
New York is home to several organizations that are uniting the city’s disparate academic institutions in pursuit of common goals. This month will mark the opening of the New York Genome Center, an effort among 11 colleges to collaborate on genomics research. In November, the New York eHealth Collaborative held its first conference, which was designed to bring together top players in the field of health IT. And just yesterday, the Academy for Medical Development and Collaboration (AMDeC) rolled out a set of enhancements to its year-old online registry—the only resource in the region that provides real-time access to technology and resources for biomedical researchers around the city who want to work together. read more…

The Academy for Medical Development & Collaboration Morphs into a Shared-Services Facilitator
It was fractiousness among New York City’s traditionally self-contained biomedical institutions that led to the creation of the Academy for Medical Development & Collaboration (AMDeC) in 1997. But as the institutions slowly began to embrace collaboration and their needs changed over the past decade or so, the consortium had to change with the times.
During the past two years, AMDeC has evolved toward more of a facilitator for shared, cost-efficient services offered by its 19 members, most of them research institutes, medical schools, hospitals, and universities in the New York region. Through its AMDeC F.I.R.S.T.™ (facilities, instrumentation, resources, services, and technologies) program, the consortium operates a web-based registry of more than 100 core facilities in AMDeC member institutions that together have close to 1,000 services and technologies. Through its Vendor Partnership Program, AMDeC offers its members discounts on items from about a dozen participating vendors, with another 10 prospective vendors in talks. read more…

As an adviser to Mayor Giuliani on health issues, Chair of the Board of the Health and Hospitals Corporation, and founder of the New York City Office of Family Violence and Abuse, Mitchell has led AMDeC since its founding in 1997. AMDeC, the Academy for Medical Development and Collaboration, provides leadership in facilitating collaboration between academia and industry in biomedical research and in creating efficiencies to help members progress toward medical breakthroughs and discoveries. read more…
